In simpler terms, it adjusts the camshaft for the intake and exhaust. The bmw vanos (variable nockenwellen steuerung in german) is a variable valve timing technology developed by bmw. The bmw e90 engine utilizes two vanos (variable camshaft timing) solenoids. Well if swapping the vanos solenoids changes nothing i would definitely check to make sure the engine is still in time.
